Jessica's Friday Five: 13K Subscribers = Free Books! (Plus MileIQ App That Saved Me Hours)

Hi Reader,

Guess what, Friday Fivers? We surpassed 13,000 subscribers to this email newsletter earlier this week. We have now got ourselves a little tradition, and when we reach a new milestone like this, each of you can enter a little raffle to win a book (you can watch me pick the winners back in March, the last time we did this). If you'd like to join, scroll to the bottom, and I'll pick 3 of you using a random wheel of names. I'll send the 3 winners each a book of your choice from a local bookstore. How fun. We'll do it again when we reach 14k!

Now let's get to your Friday Five!

  1. Tracking Mileage: If you need to track mileage for work or tax purposes, I love the MileIQ app for this. Friday Fiver Jenny mentioned it to me (recommended to her by her accountant) and I have been trying it out since early 2025. It automatically tracks your drive and then you just swipe to mark the drive as personal or professional. It even starts noticing trends and then automatically categorizes drives (like it suggested to me that it should automatically tag trips to my kids' school as personal after I marked that specific trip as personal a few times in a row). My previous system for tracking mileage for my business expenses and tax purposes involved a manual spreadsheet and my virtual assistant's time every month. This is much easier and is going to save me time and money. Hope it helps you too!
  2. Make Kids Your Accountability Partner: At the recent Mom 2.0 conference, I met a new kindred spirit and friend, Tami Hackbarth. She led a session on habits, and I loved a tip she shared: if there are kids in your life, make them your accountability partner for a habit you want to build. Just tell them, "You're the captain of making sure I drink a glass of water before we leave for school in the morning," or "Can you help remind me not to look at my phone while we're driving?" or "Will you hold me accountable for going for a walk after dinner on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays?". Even pretty young kids would love to be put in charge of something and then, boom, helpful (even if occasionally annoying) accountability for that thing you want to prioritize.
  3. Check Sus Links Before Clicking: My brilliant and techy friend Fi shared this helpful tip last week about how to tell if a link is suspicious/malicious before clicking on it. I had no idea that tools like this existed! So handy.
  4. Feedback Culture: A few weeks ago, I was helping a client plan a session on giving great feedback for some new managers on his team (hi Joe!). I shared this quote with him, which has been helpful in motivating me to give feedback, even when it's hard, to people I work with and care about. I also shared this "hot wash" template from The Ready that can be helpful for teams building a more intentional feedback culture. Let me know if your team needs some team learning or planning time - I'd love to help and am currently booking for summer workshops and retreats.
  5. Body-Doubling for Introverts and Extroverts: If you've been here a while, you know I love FLOWN for virtual co-working/body doubling. I got a question from Jen last month and wanted to share my answer with all of you: she asked about whether it'd be a good fit for introverts and extroverts, and I shared, "It works well for me as an introvert, and I'm guessing it would probably also be helpful for extroverts (especially those who generally work alone). It's just a little taste of human interaction (for example, I'm in a session right now that's 2 hours long, and halfway through, the moderator (Viki, one of my faves) brought us back together to play some trivia in the chat, and that was fun. Then we all got back to work), which is not overwhelming for me as an introvert and might be a lifeline for the extroverts. Oh, and also, they let folks choose in the longer sessions whether to go into a breakout and share what they will work on with a couple of other folks for a few minutes or just put it in the chat. I always do chat. :). If it sounds helpful, try it out (free 30-day trial with my link) and send me a chat if you see me in a session!
