Jessica's Friday Five: Google doc timers, pet sitting, and toothpaste caps

Hi Reader,

This week started with an incredible group of leaders joining the newest cohort of Joyfully Managed Worklife. The next cohort will either start in November or January - put yourself on the waitlist here if you're interested. I also launched a new free resource about appreciation at work and am playing with some ways of potentially starting a podcast for all of you. If I could get the weather to cool down a few dozen degrees so I can start wearing sweaters, things would be really rocking and rolling over here.

  1. NEW: Best Practices of Incredible Managers Workshop: I asked a few weeks ago about which workshop would most support you, and management best practices was the clear winner. You got it! Let's gather on September 17th at 10am PT/1pm ET, and I'll share my best practical strategies in 60 minutes. Donate any amount here to get your spot - 100% of proceeds go straight to the Harris/Walz campaign (here's why, and newly and devastatingly this week, for the teachers and kids at Apalachee who deserve better from their elected leaders, like all of us in America). See you there.
  2. Easily Add a Timer to Your Google Doc: If you're following me on LinkedIn you might have already seen this, but did you know you can put a timer right into a Google Doc (super useful for situations like a meeting agenda). Here's a 1-min video on how to do it that I made for you (I learned this from a workshop participant this week - thanks, Jodi!).
  3. Trusted Housesitter: Last fall, we were fostering a dog, and my friend Rachel advised me if we ended up adopting to join Trusted Housesitter as her "#1 tip for people with dogs". We didn't end up adopting that dog, but we still joined Trusted Housesitter and have been house-sitting for others with pets (I just spent a fun weekend with a cute cat named Nova while doing a little "business retreat" for myself to do some planning for the fall)! It's a great way to get some pet time if you love animals but don't have any of your own at home, travel to new places and stay for free, or get a pet sitter if you have pets at home that need care when you're away. You pay to join the site, and then no money changes hands after that - you can see reviews both ways.
  4. Toothpaste Caps: A friend saw this in my bathroom and asked me about it last week, which reminded me to share it here since thousands of you have joined since I last mentioned these cheap little wonders. You put them on your toothpaste tubes, and they save you time not having to take them off and put them on the top and save so much mess. Truly the best $6 you could spend (and you get 3 of them for that price!).
  5. Stepparent Success School: I know many stepparents, so when I saw that my friend Amy had this offering, I put it on my list to share. Are you a stepparent who craves more happiness in your daily life at home? Is life as a stepparent not matching up with what you expected? Do you feel like an outsider in your own home or just a little bit isolated by not quite knowing who to turn to for support? Amy is a mentor and a coach for stepparents and she’s offering a new course called Stepparent Success School. In Stepparent Success School, you’ll learn how to define success for yourself so that you can do things you enjoy instead of feeling pressured to do things others suggest. In Stepparent Success School, you’ll learn tools to create your sense of security and safety so you do not feel stuck in a cycle of fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. In Stepparent Success School, you’ll learn tools to communicate without conflict and discuss tough topics without arguing. All of this is inside Stepparent Success School for just $97.

Bonus Democracy Deeds: If you're wondering what these "democracy deeds" are all about, they're around for the next 8 issues of Friday Five and here's why I am including them.

  • Early voting starts in some places in two weeks. November 5th is not Election Day—it is the last day to vote because most of us will cast our ballots before then. If you're waiting until things get closer to start phone banking or knocking on doors, you can get engaged now before ballots are filled out in 14 days. Here's an easy way to plug in.
  • ¿Hablas español? Phone bank to voters in English and Spanish here. Thanks to my friend Yanira for doing this and sharing about it!
  • Votebeat Newsletter: Civic News is doing a great job covering the election - you can get their newsletter here.
  • Dads for Kamala: Sign up here and tell the dads in your life!
  • Donate any amount and get a spot at my workshop on September 17th.
