Jessica's Friday Five: my most-used browser extension
Published about 5 hours ago • 3 min read
Hi Reader,
Last night, my husband planned a date night for us at a virtual reality spot not far from our house. You'll be glad to know we saved the (pretend) world with 14 seconds to spare. We decided to get a low-cost dinner at Burger King while we were out. Jon enjoyed his whopper but I made the very questionable choice of ordering tacos (a bold choice for dinner from a burger spot). I give Burger King tacos 0 out of 5 stars.
Let's get to your Friday Five!
The Essence of Ramadan: As someone who is not Muslim, I deepened my understanding of Ramadan this week more because of two great women in my life. My friend Hajra brought me dates when we met for coffee, and I learned that they are a popular food for breaking fast at the end of the day. Another friend, Sara, shared this beautiful piece about what the holiday means and how it's so much deeper than just the technical parts like fasting. I encourage you to read it as well!
Have better conversations with boys (science-backed): If you have a son, teach boys, or love one, you'll like this. My in-real-life friend Rachel Sklar (parent coach + 3x boy mom) is hosting a free live conversation on March 12 with TEDx speaker and author Ryan Parke about how boys and men bond differently (biologically differently) than women. Apparently, oxytocin (the “bonding hormone” we’re always told to lean into) doesn’t work the same way on the male brain and can even increase stress. 🤯 They’ll be talking about what does work, and how to have inclusive, engaging, and effective conversations with boys without them shutting down. Highly recommend! It’s free. March 12 at 12 pm PST. Save your seat here.
A Little Wiser Newsletter - The Number 1 Microlearning Newsletter: In just 5 minutes a day, A Little Wiser sends 3 quick topics, 3x a week—history, science, philosophy, psychology, and more, all explained simply. Recent issues include: • Dante's descent through the underworld • The economics of a Formula 1 team • Napoleon's formative years • What really shapes greatness. If you want short, insightful explanations without the fluff, try it out here.
3 Reasons to Stop Drinking: Quick share today of something I found helpful… especially when trying to organize and enjoy your life! My friend Michelle Kelley Olsen (Shell) created a simple, powerful guide called “3 Steps to Curb Your Drinking Habits Without Quitting!” It teaches a simple, non-judgmental way to curb your drinking habits without quitting. I thought you might appreciate it too. 👉 Get her 3-Step Guide here. I’m not sure how long Shell will have this available, so grab it while it’s still free.
Text Blaze Chrome Extension:This is my most frequently used Google Chrome browser extension by far. It allows you to create little snippets that, when typed, are replaced by a longer bit of text. I have about two dozen shortcuts I've made over time and use regularly to easily drop in text like my mailing address, my LinkedIn profile URL, my Calendly link, my bio, etc. It's free, which makes it even better.
Bonus Sponsor Resource: Arena: If you’re feeling alarmed, angry, or unsure how to respond as your rights and communities come under attack, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to stay on the sidelines.
Arena helps you find your place in Democratic politics. They run practical, hands-on training for people who want to start a political career or grow their impact once they’re in it.
In these trainings, you’ll learn campaign fundamentals, leadership and people-management skills, and how modern political work actually happens—from digital strategy and authentic communication to adapting in a fast-changing environment. You’ll learn from experienced practitioners and join a network that supports you long after the training ends.
This moment needs people ready to step up. If that’s you, apply today! This resource is from one of our Friday Five sponsors - thank you to them for keeping this newsletter free for readers!
