Jessica's Friday Five: Offline email, fire pit, and why not to donate to Senate races

Hi Reader,

This week, I got the chance to facilitate 5 different experiences for many incredible leaders across the globe, from education leaders in America to nonprofit leaders in Europe, and the final session of the current cohort of Joyfully Managed Worklife. I, like many of you, have a worried eye on the hurricane-related devastation happening in Florida (which is where I was born), and I'm sending so much love to everyone who is dealing with this tragedy and losing loved ones and beloved homes and belongings. World Central Kitchen is helping on the ground, and I hope you'll join me in donating to support their work in Florida, North Carolina, Gaza, and many other areas where there is a massive need for healing food.

Let's get to your Friday Five, shall we?

  1. Offline Google Docs & Gmail: If you're a Gmail and/or Google Docs user, did you know you can make your email account available offline, and the same is true for your Google Docs/Sheets/Slides/etc.? It can help when wifi is spotty or when you're trying to avoid expensive wifi charges while traveling. In Gmail, go to your Settings and then look for "Offline" along the top bar, then create a browser bookmark to quickly get to your email when offline (Ctrl + D to make a bookmark). In a specific Google Doc, Sheet, or Slide Deck, go to "File", then "Make Available Offline". I use this for my most-used documents and any slide decks I'm using when presenting in person so that lack of wifi doesn't interrupt my access to my slides.
  2. Outdoor & indoor fire pits: The temperature is finally dropping where I live as we head into fall, and we're heading off today to a weekend of camping with friends. I'm excited for some time around the campfire, and that reminded me to share this fire pit that we like for our backyard. It's the smokeless kind, which is much more pleasant than the one we used to own years ago. We also use this indoor version all the time - it works with rubbing alcohol (!!) to create a tiny tabletop fire for indoor cozy vibes and s'mores.
  3. Changemaker Coaching Program: If you work in a social change organization, read on: my former coach, Rayne Martin (who has had an unparalleled impact on my professional journey), is filling up the spots in the next group cohort of The Changemaker program - with 1:1 coaching, mastermind group time, and content workbooks and videos. It's worth checking out if you want to have a more significant impact and lead more effectively within your organization. She also has a powerful group experience for leadership teams to do together; if you're in charge of a senior-level team, you already know how much developing others matters. If you want your team to have higher ownership levels, fix any trust or cohesion issues, and ensure everyone gets the leadership support they deserve, you should connect with Rayne. I highly recommend scheduling a free call with Rayne (she's lovely; I'm pretty sure the call will be the highlight of your day) to see if one of these programs might be a good fit for you or someone on your team. My friend Sonya also had an incredible experience with Rayne. Learn more about some of her impressive clients' results here. Say hi to Rayne from me if you talk with her!
  4. Feeling stuck career-wise? My friend Sweta is doing a free workshop next week that I thought some of you might find helpful! This would be for mid-career folks who feel stuck or uncertain about their next moves, unsure how to make decisions that will lead to meaning, balance, and passion in work and life. She'll share her frameworks to help you navigate an upgrade or crossroads with more clarity on operating when you choose to design your role/next move for what you want now. Every time I spend time with Sweta over tea or swimming with our kids, I enjoy it so much, so I bet you will love learning from her as much as I do. https://www.drswetachawla.com/midcareer
  5. Time to get those fall vaccines: If you haven't gotten your updated COVID vaccine, it's time! The updated vaccines for kids and adults protect against the currently circulating strains. My kids, husband, and I got our flu + COVID shots on the same day last week, and I'm so glad to know we are protecting ourselves and others around us too. Then celebrate with some ice cream afterward for kids + adults!

Bonus Democracy Deeds: If you're wondering what these "democracy deeds" are all about, they're around for the next 3 issues of Friday Five and here's why I am including them.

  • Three things to do: I appreciated Ben's analysis of the 3 most significant ways to impact the election. He says not to donate to Senate races at this point, FWIW.
  • If you're an Auburn or Alabama fan, check out what's happening at bit.ly/IronBowlRivalsFundraisingChallenge, then do two things: 1) donate to your favorite team and 2) send the link to your friends to help your team win! As of this writing, Auburn is winning in total donations but Bama is winning in # of donors.
