Jessica's Friday Five: You can stop carrying your driver license in these states

Hi Reader,

Yesterday, I chaperoned some 5th graders on a trip to the zoo. They were as silly about red baboon bottoms as you'd expect and as thrilled about the half cup of Dippin' Dots you get for $8 as you'd expect. I tried to learn some new Gen Alpha lingo and felt pretty old when their explanations of the phrases didn't make sense to me at all. Let's get to your Friday Five - five tips for an easier and more joyful life.

  1. Holiday Cards Deal This Sunday: If you don't want to send holiday cards, here's a permission slip to skip out on that tradition with zero guilt. If you enjoy sending holiday cards (I am in this camp - it's one of my favorite activities of the year), this weekend is probably a good time to get them because Shutterfly is doing 25% cash back through Rakuten this Sunday (the 17th) on top of a bunch of coupons you can find online like 40% off. Here's what I'd recommend: 1) Get a Rakuten account if you don't already have one through my link, which gets you an extra $30 cash back, then 2) click through the Rakuten site to the Shutterfly site (preferably through one of the coupons listed at the bottom here for even more savings) to activate the 25% cash back (this will only work on Sunday the 17th). Have fun!
  2. Would I Say Yes to This Tomorrow? At a conference last week, author Laura Vanderkam shared a powerful decision-making principle with a small group of us: When considering future commitments, don't assume your future self will be less busy than you are now. Instead, ask yourself, "Would I say yes if this were happening tomorrow?"If you wouldn't rearrange your schedule to do it tomorrow, your future self probably won't appreciate that Past You committed Future You to it. Only say yes to future commitments that would be worth reshuffling your day for right now.
  3. QuickForget.Com: I saw this tip in a newsletter this week, and it's already helped me twice. This free tool is designed to assist in sending sensitive information through email. For example, you can send a username through email but send the password through this site separately and have it expire in a few minutes or after it's viewed once, etc. Hope it helps!
  4. Driver's License on your Phone: Some states now allow you to store your driver's license on your phone. If you're in AZ, CA, CO, GA, or MD, you can store yours in Google Wallet on an Android phone. If you're in AZ, CA, CO, GA, HI, IA, MD, or OH, you can store it in your Apple Wallet on an iPhone. iPhone directions here, and Android directions here.
  5. Flu + COVID Tests in One: My moms group text shared a few weeks back that there are now single at-home tests that can test for Flu A, Flu B, and COVID all in one swap in 10 minutes. Super helpful as we head into cold and flu season - you can get them online at stores like Amazon or at a drugstore. If you have FSA funds that you need to spend before the calendar year ends, getting a few of these tests could be a good idea (we love FSA Store for those purchases in our house because everything on their site is FSA-eligible).
